Senior Spotlight on Nzinga
Nzinga (pronounced En-zing-uh) began participating in our program last year as a junior at Science Leadership Academy. This year alone, she has been named a semi-finalist for forensic debate, a quarter-finalist at Liberty Bell (an international debate tournament), selected as a college access leader to mentor younger students on the college process, and written an article for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
For Nzinga, Inn Dwelling has meant meeting people from all different backgrounds and learning from them; in addition to her experience at ID, she has found a mentor in her college counselor at SLA--all of which have lead her to a defined path.
Planning to major in Business Marketing, English, and Communications Studies, Nzinga has applied to a whole host of colleges; though she is still waiting to hear from several, she has so far been awarded over $815,000 in 4-year scholarship aid from her schools. Her top choices are Antioch, Guilford (to which she's been invited to their Honors Program), and Goucher. Nzinga's ultimate career goals are to help educate others: in the short-term through admissions at universities and then in the long-term as a marketing director for a magazine or newspaper, following graduate school.
To Nzinga, Inn Dwelling has meant more than just an after-school program. It has given her the ability to make a name for herself, create a brand for herself, and altogether taught her how to be her own champion: "Because of Inn Dwelling, I have broadened horizons and a honed sense of what I want in and outside of the classroom. Having Inn Dwelling in my life will take me places I've only dreamed of and thought possible for others."
